Coffee grows only in the tropics, between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer, to be exact. It requires a frost-free climate and flourishes when grown in volcanic soil, with moderate rainfall and plenty of sunshine. The very best coffees come from higher elevations where the longer, slower growing cycle results in a smaller crop of beans with greater flavor intensity and concentration.
As the growing environment has a major affect on the quality and flavor of coffees, we’ve put our own spin on what happens when all these elements come together. They give a coffee its unique flavor or, quite drinkably, it’s Taste of Place™. It’s our version of a concept the French coined long ago known as Terroir. Terroir is the combined affect of sun, soil, moisture, air and elevation on an agricultural product.
